A study of Valorie Salimpoor and Robert Zatorre, neuroscientists at McGill University, investigated the ways in which dopamine affects the brain while music is playing. They also measured body temperature and heart rate. With their brains under observation through the Tomography of Position (PET) subjects listened to their favorite music while scientists watched the release of dopamine. The subjects were instructed to press a button during the time in music when they felt chills or emotion. Researchers recorded an increase in dopamine when subjects anticipated certain parts of their favorite music. The limbic system of the brain, which governs its response to emotion, reacted to the peak moment when the subjects pressed their buttons to mean they were experiencing a high induced by music. Salimpoor's notes, "the high euphoric music is neurochemically reinforced by our brain so we can return to them. It's like drugs. It works in the same system as cocaine." The human response to music is well documented throughout history. Research on the physical effects of listening to family music and the theme of addiction to music is quite new, however. The liberation of dopamine is commonly associated with a human response to meeting needs. This type of brain activity is a hard wiring survival mechanism. The study of McGill University shows that music, an abstract stimulus, is worthy of additional study, as is the human response to aesthetic stimulation. Humans are likely to be evolving to improve the process and enjoy this kind of external stimulus, which makes it crucial to achieve greater quality of life. Humans go to large extensions and spend large amounts of time, money and effort, to experience the ideal musical experience. A modern example of a deep culture of fans sitting is the legendary Deadheads. This group of people followed the Grateful Dead throughout North America throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s in an effort to see as many shows as possible. This community finally started using the term "factor X" to express how their experiences in Grateful Dead shows became more than listening to music. Blair Jackson, biographer of Jerry García, said, "for many Deadheads, the band was a medium that facilitated experiencing other planes of consciousness and playing in deep and spiritual wells that were generally the province of organized religion... [they] had tall people if those people were drugged or not." The collective obsession with replicated music through high-end stereo systems and costly portable electronics illustrates the overwhelming need to keep your favorite music, including motivating or comforting playlists, near.
